FPC UV Laser Cutting Process & Validation

FPC UV laser cutting can cover contours, irregular edges, coverlay windows, precision depaneling and micro-hole processing. Route selection should start with the real stack: polyimide, coverlay, copper-foil laminate, adhesive, copper thickness, minimum pitch and allowable heat-affected zone all shape the sample-validation plan.

Evidence note: This page describes a process-evaluation method, not a published customer case or a guarantee of edge quality, dimensions or cycle time. Final results require the customer’s representative materials and drawings.

Process challenges to define before testing

  • Multi-layer response: Polyimide, coverlay, copper foil and adhesive layers respond differently, so parameters should not be selected from the term “FPC” alone.
  • Edge and heat acceptance: Carbonization, burrs, allowable heat impact and dimensional consistency need measurable acceptance criteria.
  • Registration and compensation: Fiducial recognition, graphic compensation, material warpage and vacuum holding affect contour, window and micro-hole position.
  • Process coverage: Contours, irregular edges, coverlay windows, stiffener or adhesive-layer work, depaneling and micro-holes should not be assumed to share one parameter set.

Recommended sample-validation method

  1. Confirm drawings and stack: Separate contours, windows, depaneling and micro-holes, then confirm every material layer, copper thickness, adhesive, fiducials and inspection method.
  2. Screen candidate sources: Compare 355 nm UV, picosecond or femtosecond routes on representative samples instead of assuming one universal result.
  3. Inspect critical features: Check start and stop points, corners, fine-pitch areas, coverlay edges and micro-hole regions for carbonization, burrs, heat impact and dimensions.
  4. Repeat registration by area: Under the intended vacuum-holding and fiducial conditions, repeat tests in different processing areas to verify graphic compensation and dimensional consistency.
  5. Confirm the production route: Freeze the laser, scanner, XY stage, vacuum fixture, extraction, inspection and handling configuration only after the samples meet the agreed criteria.

Equipment route

  • Laser source: The current product page lists 355 nm UV, picosecond or femtosecond sources; the final route depends on the material stack and sample results.
  • Motion and registration: A high-precision scanner, XY linear-motor stage, fiducial recognition and automatic graphic compensation support contour, window and micro-hole positioning.
  • Part and quality control: Vacuum holding, fume collection and process-quality inspection should be configured around flatness, processing area and the agreed inspection method.

Application page versus equipment page

This application page owns the process question: FPC stack, risks, inspection methods and sample-validation decisions. The product page owns the configurable 355 nm UV, picosecond or femtosecond source, scanner, XY stage, vision, vacuum and extraction capabilities. Neither page replaces an authorized customer case, and a concept image is not evidence of a cutting result.
