Medical UDI Laser Marking, Verification and Traceability

AOGEO / PART IDENTIFICATION & TRACEABILITY

A UDI marking project connects an approved identifier with a physical part and a reliable production record. Evaluate the mark, the reading environment and the data workflow together—not just the contrast of a freshly marked sample.

Start with the identifier and the device-specific marking scope

Confirm the target market, applicable issuing system, approved data structure, human-readable information, permitted location and available marking area. Do not assume that every component requires the same code or the same direct-part mark.

For the United States, FDA's UDI framework includes device identification, labeling and database responsibilities; direct marking depends on the device and applicable provisions. The device labeler should confirm these requirements before the production mark is finalized.

Trial the mark on the actual material and surface

A material name is only the starting point. Include alloy or polymer grade, finish, coatings, curvature, permitted surface change and downstream handling in the trial.

Part conditionTrial questionRecord to review
Polished or reflective metalCan the code be distinguished under the intended illumination and viewing geometry?Mark recipe, lighting, viewing angle and verification setup.
Coated or treated surfaceIs the marked change permitted, and is any underlying layer exposed?Coating specification, marked-region inspection and agreed surface acceptance.
Small or curved componentDoes the allowed area support the specified symbol and reading access?Location, size, curvature, focus strategy and part positioning.
Reusable instrumentHow will the mark and the surface be evaluated after the specified reprocessing exposure?Customer-defined lifecycle conditions, sampling and post-exposure inspection.

Separate reading, verification and data correctness

Direct-part marks have surface and lighting characteristics that require an appropriate verification method. ISO/IEC 29158 addresses DPM symbol-quality assessment. Use the specification applicable to the project and agree its parameters; do not apply a universal pass grade to every device.

Reading

Can the selected reader decode the symbol in the intended production or use setup? Define part position, illumination and the permitted reading time.

Symbol verification

What symbol-quality result does the agreed method produce? Record the specification, edition, verifier, illumination and acceptance criteria; one successful scan is not the same evidence.

Data correctness

Does the decoded content match the approved work order and part? Check field formatting, variable data and the response to missing, duplicated or mismatched identifiers.

Design the record and failure path before automating

  • Define the source of authorized marking data and how the correct recipe is selected for the part.
  • Link the work order or part identifier with recipe revision, result, inspection status and required timestamps.
  • Specify how a no-read, failed verification, duplicate code or connection failure is contained and reviewed.
  • Agree access roles, record retention, export format and interfaces with the customer's systems.
  • Test restart, rework and interrupted-cycle behavior so that an operator cannot accidentally create an untracked replacement mark.

Match the marking station to the complete workflow

Select the laser route through actual material trials. General fiber, UV, MOPA or green-laser comparisons explain the technology choices, but the accepted medical mark must be evaluated on the actual part and intended conditions.

  • Medical UDI laser-marking and vision-traceability system: Review the source and optics, fixture and focus, vision or verifier configuration, data interface and failure handling against the agreed mark and record requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Is a readable code sufficient for a UDI marking project?

No. Readability, encoded-data correctness, symbol verification, surface effects and record handling are separate checks. Confirm the device-specific and market requirements as well as the equipment acceptance plan.

Can black marking be selected only from a photograph?

No. A photograph does not establish how the mark reads under the intended setup or how the marked surface responds to the specified downstream conditions. Evaluate actual samples and the agreed tests.

Does a UDI laser-marking system make a device compliant automatically?

No. The system is a manufacturing tool. The device labeler confirms applicable identification, labeling, registration and lifecycle requirements; the equipment project implements and checks the agreed marking workflow.
