Manifold Laser Welding Cell Selection: Check Joint Access Before Choosing Motion
A robot, gantry or rotary axis is not a complete manifold welding solution by itself. The first selection task is to show how every approved tube joint reaches a repeatable position beneath the processing optics. This checklist helps buyers compare cell proposals through the actual branch arrangement, fixtures and production sequence. It is especially useful when a manifold family contains similar-looking parts with very different access constraints.

Create a joint register for the entire manifold
Number each connection on the drawing and record its material, wall arrangement, orientation and required seal boundary. Distinguish tube-to-body, tube-to-fitting and any other interface instead of grouping them as one weld type. Identify nearby branches and functional surfaces that limit access. Include the least accessible approved product variant in the review. A proposal based only on one convenient joint can underestimate fixture complexity and the repositioning needed for the complete assembly.
Separate part rotation from head movement
For each joint, assess whether the part can rotate to present a consistent seam or whether the processing head must follow a more complex route. Consider the swept envelope of fittings, supports, hoses and clamps, not just the nominal tube diameter. Rotation can simplify one joint while making another inaccessible. Ask for the proposed coordinate system and joint presentation sequence so that both sides can understand which motion is essential and which is merely an optional convenience.

Define fit-up and locating responsibilities
Determine how tube insertion, branch angle, joint gap and axial location are established before welding. Identify whether a fixture, a component feature or a separate preparation operation controls each condition. Check how the system detects a missing, reversed or incompletely seated component. A cell with accurate motion cannot compensate for an undefined assembly state. Agree which incoming dimensions are inspected and which assembled dimensions are verified so that responsibility does not fall between component preparation and the welding station.
| Cell-selection input | Question for the proposal | Useful demonstration |
|---|---|---|
| Dense branch arrangement | Can optics reach each complete joint? | Full-part access sequence |
| Rotating assembly | What sweeps through the work envelope? | Clamped rotation review |
| Product family | Which fixtures and recipes change? | Variant identification and changeover |
| Test handoff | How is a welded part sealed and identified? | Transfer and test connection sequence |
Build the cycle from complete operations
Break the proposed cycle into loading, locating, clamping, part verification, approach, welding, repositioning, release and unloading. Include any purge, cooling or intermediate inspection required by the agreed process. Compare complete cycles on the same part rather than comparing a robot travel time with another supplier's weld-only time. Record which operations can overlap and which share the same fixture or operator. This reveals whether the limiting task is welding, presentation or handling before a production rate is promised.
Plan the leak-test handoff before freezing the fixture
Show where test connectors seal and whether all relevant paths are exposed to the intended test pressure and tracer gas. Temporary plugs can create leaks or mask paths if their function is not understood. Distinguish whole-part pass/fail measurement from local investigation with a sniffer. Keep part identity attached through transfer so that a test result belongs to the correct welded assembly. AOGEO can then discuss the welding workcell and leak-inspection interface as connected tasks rather than disconnected purchases.
Use a representative acceptance demonstration
Choose parts that exercise difficult joint access, fixture changes and complete seal paths. Specify the evidence required for weld integrity, dimensions, leak testing and repeatable operation. Include an approved recovery sequence after an interrupted cycle, because restarting a partially welded manifold is not the same as loading a new part. Record what the equipment must identify, what an operator must confirm and which conditions require rejection or review. Those details make the purchase specification more useful than a list of axes and nominal laser power.

Should every manifold use a robot?
Choose the architecture from the joint geometry, access and product mix. A robot is one possible motion arrangement, not an automatic requirement.
Is rotary positioning always faster?
Assess the complete clamped assembly and cycle. Rotation may simplify seam presentation but can add handling or access constraints.
Can a sniffer result replace overall leak acceptance?
Only the agreed test method and validated coverage determine acceptance. Local leak location and whole-part measurement are different tasks.
