Helium Leak Testing for Liquid Cooling Components
AOGEO / Engineering decisions
A useful leak-test specification describes the complete measurement task, not just the detector sensitivity. Define the inspected boundary, method, gas conditions, fixtures and decision rule together. Helium verification connects welding quality to production release without replacing the part's other qualification tests.

Define the boundary and the decision
Start with a diagram showing the part, temporary plugs, adapters, fill connection and every interface included in the measurement. State whether the task is an overall leakage decision, local inspection, defect location or a combination. A connector placed over a joint may remove that joint from the tested boundary, so test-tool design belongs in the qualification discussion.
Describe the criterion with its unit, reference conditions and permitted test direction. Operating pressure, test pressure and pressure differential are not interchangeable terms. The part and fixture must tolerate the planned loading and unloading conditions. Retain the test procedure revision and the identity of the assembly configuration being judged.
Choose a vacuum chamber or a sniffer by task
A vacuum-chamber arrangement can support overall leakage measurement under controlled conditions, while a sniffer samples gas locally along accessible interfaces. The suitable route depends on part geometry, permitted pressure differential, required measurement capability, accessible surfaces and the production task. They may complement one another, but two helium-based methods are not automatically interchangeable.
For local inspection, define the path, access, probe handling and response behavior as part of the procedure. For chamber testing, evaluate the complete chamber and fixture background, evacuation, stabilization, measurement and venting sequence. A detector's published lower limit does not establish the detection capability of the integrated station.

Control gas and pressure conditions
Specify tracer concentration, filling route, test pressure, allowed differential direction and the condition of the part before measurement. Gas retained from earlier tests or uncontrolled tracer in the surrounding area can affect the background. A concentration change must be handled through a validated method rather than an assumed universal correction.
Include controlled exhaust and, where selected, recovery and concentration management in the equipment scope. Keep helium consumption separate from nominal detector performance. Gas handling must follow the site's approved pressure-system and workplace-safety arrangements; the technical specification should define responsibilities and interfaces clearly.
Verify the complete measurement chain
Plan checks that exercise the intended measurement path, not only the instrument electronics. A reference leak, the connecting volume, fixture seals, gas supply and the part arrangement can influence the station response. Define the calibration-check method, applicable reference conditions, handling and validity criteria in the procedure.
Use deliberate known conditions to investigate false rejects and missed leaks. Separate a part failure from fixture leakage, unstable background, contamination, connector wear or an incorrect recipe. Retest rules should preserve the first result and record why a repeat measurement was permitted, rather than silently replacing failures.
Integrate testing without hiding the cycle
A complete test cycle includes loading, connection, filling or evacuation, stabilization, measurement, unloading and any required recovery or purge. Production planning should include these steps, changeover and maintenance checks. Parallel testing or a buffer may improve the line arrangement, but it does not remove the method's response requirements.
Assign a clear route to pass, fail and inconclusive results. Link the part identity to method, recipe, measured result, conditions and disposition. A repaired component should return through an approved verification route, with its original history retained. Test-system health checks and part acceptance should remain distinguishable in the data model.
| Specification field | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Method and boundary | States what the result actually covers |
| Gas, pressure and direction | Makes test conditions reproducible |
| Background and reference checks | Supports confidence in station response |
| Decision and retest rules | Prevents ambiguous release or hidden failures |
Connect leakage results to broader qualification
Helium testing evaluates a defined leakage task. Pressure proof, burst, flow restriction, thermal performance and environmental reliability each examine other requirements. Passing one test cannot be used as evidence that every other requirement has passed, and a universal conversion from a helium reading to water leakage should not be assumed.
AOGEO's vacuum chamber and sniffer equipment provide distinct discussion routes, with integration available in the welding and leak-testing line. Begin the enquiry with the assembly boundary, intended criterion, representative parts and production sequence. Agree how measurement capability, cycle and traceability will be demonstrated before the final acceptance run.

Is helium a welding shielding gas in this context?
Here helium is the tracer used for leak testing. Welding protection and tracer-gas testing are separate process decisions.
Should every part receive both chamber and sniffer testing?
Not automatically. Choose the sequence from the measurement task, required capability, defect-location needs and validated quality plan.
Can the detector's sensitivity be used as the station acceptance limit?
The complete station must demonstrate capability under the agreed conditions. Instrument sensitivity alone does not include fixtures, background, gas handling and the part.
