Automated Cold Plate Laser Welding & Helium Leak-Testing Line

Integrated cold plate welding cell, helium test chamber and pallet transfer
Welding and helium inspection remain distinct stations in an integrated route.

LIQUID COOLING MANUFACTURING EQUIPMENT

Connect cold plate laser welding, helium leakage verification and traceable material flow in one engineered line. Begin with the component family and acceptance route, then define station responsibilities, buffers, data interfaces and rejection handling.

An integrated line is more than a faster welding station

The copper cold plate welding platform addresses the joining operation. This line adds the coordination needed to move identified parts through the selected preparation, welding and testing route. It can also interface with a manifold and tube-joint cell where the project includes those assemblies. Define the supported product mix and changeover method rather than treating every part as one recipe.

Agree the incoming condition, output condition and responsibility for each boundary: loading, fixture handling, cleaning, process gases, test connections, code reading and factory data exchange. Final channel cleaning and separate structural or thermal tests remain explicit tasks wherever they sit in the overall manufacturing plan.

Build the station map from the quality route

Example station functions to configure, not a fixed universal sequence

Identification and loadingCorrect part, fixture, recipe and incoming disposition
Preparation and positioningRequired cleanliness, datums, fit-up and access
Laser weldingSelected beam/source configuration, trajectory and process record
Test preparationDefined seals, tracer-gas handling and readiness checks
Overall helium testingSpecified method and acceptance conditions
Localization or rework routingAuthorized handling of indications and repeat tests
Marking and releaseIdentity, result association and final disposition

Not every project needs every station in this order. Marking may be earlier, cleaning may require separate equipment, and localization may be an offline rework task. The line design should show these decisions visibly so that quotation scope matches the real factory route.

Define the helium boundary and its supporting modules

A vacuum chamber station can provide the defined overall leakage decision. A sniffer station can support accessible-joint localization. Tracer-gas filling, controlled discharge, recovery and concentration management are configured as modules when included in the project, with calibration and background checks integrated into the quality plan.

Gas handling follows the equipment design and factory safety plan. Define concentration verification, permitted part pressure differential and the test sequence with the responsible engineers. Do not compare line offers using detector sensitivity alone: fixtures, measurement path, cycle conditions and the agreed acceptance demonstration determine system capability.

Make cycle and data definitions comparable

Separate the customer's required output from individual operation times, changeover, scheduled checks and recovery after an interrupted cycle. Identify the likely constraint station and the buffer or routing needed to prevent ambiguous part status. A nominal laser travel speed is not a line production commitment.

Define the minimum record for each part: identity, recipe and fixture version, applicable process result, helium-test conditions and disposition. Specify what happens when a code cannot be read, a record cannot be sent, or a test is interrupted. Factory-system connections and retention responsibilities belong in the interface document.

Agree the commissioning evidence before ordering

Prepare representative product variants and a test matrix covering normal production, changeover, rejected parts and restart behavior. Machine FAT/SAT and component qualification need related but distinct evidence. Use the RFQ checklist, the helium-method guide and the acceptance-conditions guide to make the deliverables testable.

Frequently asked questions

Does the line need both chamber and sniffer stations?

Only when the quality and routing plan calls for both tasks. Localization can be offline; the selected overall acceptance method must still be qualified.

Can a quoted welding speed define the whole line output?

No. Compare the complete operating cycle, product mix, checks, changeover and agreed availability assumptions.
