FAT and SAT for Cold Plate Laser Welding Equipment: An Acceptance Checklist
Factory acceptance testing and site acceptance testing work best when the evidence is agreed before the equipment is built. A demonstration weld alone cannot establish that a cold plate station meets its handling, inspection and production requirements. This checklist helps a buyer turn an equipment scope into observable tests while keeping component qualification separate from machine acceptance.

1. Freeze the acceptance scope and sample conditions
List the equipment functions, interfaces and deliverables to be accepted. Identify the controlled part revision, material and surface condition, fixture, recipe and inspection method for each test. State who supplies representative parts and whether the run covers one part type or an agreed mix. Separate functions that can be verified at the factory from those depending on site utilities or upstream systems. Record open items explicitly rather than allowing a successful demonstration to imply acceptance of untested functions.
2. Define the unit of throughput
A welding cycle may exclude loading, alignment, inspection, gas handling, communication and unloading. Agree whether the requirement concerns exposure time, station cycle or released components over a defined run. Include the planned changeover and replenishment conditions. For an integrated welding and helium testing line, examine buffering and the way rejected parts leave the route. Record stoppages and their causes; a short run of easy samples should not be presented as evidence of sustained output under a different production mix.

3. Connect machine tests to quality evidence
Specify the weld, dimensional and leak-test evidence collected during acceptance, including sample identity and relevant conditions. Establish who performs destructive examinations, when results become available and how a pending result affects sign-off. Keep leakage, pressure resistance and long-term reliability as distinct requirements. The acceptance matrix should make clear which process window has been evaluated and which future changes require review. Do not substitute the leak detector's specification for a demonstrated result from the complete station.
| Test group | Example evidence |
|---|---|
| Joining | Recipe, fixture revision and representative seam observations |
| Inspection | Method, conditions, result and workpiece identity |
| Handling | Loading, orientation, changeover and reject routing |
| Data | Stored records, transfer confirmation and fault response |
4. Challenge realistic exceptions
Test the agreed responses to an unreadable identifier, wrong part selection, incomplete result transfer, failed inspection and authorized rework. Verify that recovery does not lose the original record or allow an unqualified part to advance. Include maintenance and access checks appropriate to the scope. Safety-related checks must follow the approved equipment procedures and responsible engineering requirements. An acceptance run should show both normal operation and controlled recovery, not just the fastest possible cycle with every exception removed.
5. Make SAT a controlled transfer, not a repeat of the sales demonstration
At the installation site, confirm the accepted machine configuration, utilities, interfaces and representative parts. Recheck the functions affected by transport, installation or site integration. Maintain a single list of deviations, ownership, corrective action and closure evidence. The final record should identify the tested conditions and any outstanding limitations. For an AOGEO project, provide a draft acceptance matrix with the inquiry so equipment, process and data responsibilities can be aligned before the factory run is scheduled.

Frequently asked questions
Does FAT replace cold plate reliability qualification?
No. Equipment acceptance and component qualification answer different questions. Specify the required evidence and responsibility for each.
Should the cycle time include leak testing?
When the purchase requirement is released tested components, define the whole route and its bottleneck. Report isolated welding time separately.
What should remain after sign-off?
Keep the tested configuration, sample identities, results, deviations and closure evidence, together with the approved operating and maintenance deliverables.
