Pure Copper Grades for Cold Plates: ETP, OF and OFE
Separate base grade, material condition and coating before selecting a copper cold plate welding process. Material names alone do not define a production recipe.

A cold plate drawing marked only “copper” leaves important manufacturing questions unanswered. The welding discussion needs the actual base grade, the governing material standard, the delivered condition and the surface at the joint. This is especially important when an overseas purchase order uses a UNS designation while a local material certificate uses a different national designation.
The objective is not to select the most expensive copper by default. It is to establish a traceable material input that satisfies the product design and can be validated with the intended sealing process. The resulting record becomes part of the specification for the pure copper cold plate laser welding system.
Read grade names as identities, not welding recipes
| Designation | Category or meaning | Required confirmation |
|---|---|---|
| C11000 | ETP: electrolytic tough-pitch copper. | Applicable specification, certificate, product form and delivered condition. |
| C10200 | OF: oxygen-free copper. | Actual standard requirements and certified lot, not only a supplier's “oxygen-free” description. |
| C10100 | OFE: oxygen-free electronic copper. | Required grade and condition on the drawing and purchase order. |
| T2 | A designation to be checked against the customer's specified material standard. | Standard and edition, certificate and engineering approval for any proposed substitution. |
The Copper Development Association UNS table identifies the ETP, OF and OFE categories. These designations do not establish blanket interchangeability. In particular, do not automatically rewrite T2 as C11000 on a quotation or translate one into the other without checking the governing requirements.
Use three separate material axes
“Pure copper,” “oxygen-free copper” and “nickel-plated copper” are not three mutually exclusive base-metal families. Oxygen-free copper is a branch within commercially pure copper. Nickel plating describes a surface layer that can be applied to a specified copper substrate. A useful material record therefore has three separate fields.
- Base material: grade, standard, product form and traceable batch.
- Material condition: temper or delivery condition, forming history and relevant dimensional requirements.
- Surface condition: bare, oxidized, cleaned or plated, with the coating specification and manufacturing sequence.
Record the cover, base and fittings separately. A single word on the assembly drawing may conceal different inputs at each joint. The certificate for an incoming plate also does not, by itself, describe the surface after machining, storage and finishing.
Why the material record matters to laser welding
The copper joining literature distinguishes copper types and joining processes; it does not provide one universal recipe for every copper component. See the Copper Development Association welding publication for broader metallurgy context. A cold plate still needs its own laser-process and assembly validation.
During sample planning, document the features that interact with the joint: local thickness, channel location, edge preparation, fit-up, cleaning residue and clamping contact. Treat a change in grade, temper or coating as a review trigger rather than assuming that the old recipe remains valid. This does not mean every change requires the same test program; it means the engineering decision and supporting evidence should be recorded.
Likewise, a wavelength or beam-profile choice cannot compensate for an unidentified material input. Review IR–IR, IR–Blue and IR–Green welding configurations only after the material and joint are defined. Then use the same material identity when comparing candidate samples.
Build a material-to-sample validation matrix
| Record | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Drawing revision and material specification | Establish what the component was required to be. |
| Supplier certificate and lot identification | Connect the trial pieces to the delivered material. |
| Surface and coating sequence | Identify the condition at welding and at final inspection. |
| Joint and fixture identification | Separate material effects from assembly or clamping changes. |
| Inspection and leak-test results | Connect the recipe to agreed joint, geometry and sealing acceptance. |
Include representative material lots and the intended production surface in the trial plan. Preserve cross-section locations, photographs and rejected-sample records. If plating occurs after welding, evaluate the completed assembly as well as the weld-stage sample. If plating is present before welding, agree how its local condition will be documented and controlled.
Purchasing and change-control checklist
- State the grade and governing standard on the RFQ rather than using “equivalent copper” alone.
- Ask for engineering review of substitutions before material is purchased for production.
- Identify all mating materials and the coating condition at the seam.
- Define which material or surface changes require a recipe review or additional samples.
- Keep material identity linked to the part's welding and final inspection records.
The cold plate equipment RFQ checklist brings these inputs together with drawings, acceptance requirements and production planning.
Frequently asked questions
Is oxygen-free copper separate from pure copper?
No. It is a grade category within commercially pure copper; the exact designation and standard still matter.
Does nickel-plated copper identify the base grade?
No. Specify the substrate and the coating separately, including the condition at the welded joint.
Can a certificate replace a welding sample?
No. A certificate supports material identity. A representative assembly trial evaluates the selected joint, process, fixture and inspection requirements.
Send the material certificate, drawing and coating sequence for a welding review. See the liquid-cooling manufacturing solution for the connected welding, testing and traceability route.
