Copper Cold Plate Weld Design Review: Material, Plating and Joint Checklist

A copper cold plate drawing can appear complete while leaving the welding trial difficult to interpret. The missing information is often not laser power: it is the identity of the cover and base, the condition of their surfaces, the sealing boundary and the changes permitted during development. Use this checklist before sending a design for equipment selection. It turns a general request to weld copper into a controlled engineering discussion.

Give each joined component its own material identity

Identify the grade, designation system, condition and certificate requirement separately for the cover, base and fittings. A generic note such as copper does not establish that production stock will match the sample. Oxygen-free describes a material family; nickel-plated describes a surface condition. Record approved alternatives and identify which changes need another trial. Keep the material identification with the part throughout cutting, cleaning and joining so that a successful result can be repeated with traceable stock.

Map the plating rather than adding a general note

Show where each coating is present, whether it reaches the weld interface and when it is applied. Include any masked or locally prepared region and its inspection method. The useful question is not whether plated copper is always weldable, but what enters this specific joint under the proposed process. If plating is changed during development, retain the original and revised surface records. Otherwise a good seam can be wrongly attributed to a source configuration when the surface preparation also changed.

Enclosed welding cell, helium test chamber and local leak inspection fixture
Welding, whole-part leak testing and local leak location have different production tasks.

Draw the complete sealing boundary

Mark perimeter seams, internal partitions and port joints as separate features. Identify the channel that each seam protects, the region that must remain open and the surfaces used for positioning. Add representative sections through corners and transitions instead of relying only on a top view. State whether the process may change a land, cover edge or fitting orientation. This lets the equipment team assess beam access and support without silently redesigning a functional part.

Specify the fit-up condition that the fixture must achieve

Separate incoming-part tolerances from the assembled condition under restraint. Describe the intended datums, permitted gap, cover position and accessible clamping areas. Check whether a clamp masks the seam or presses on a delicate channel wall. Include released-part measurements as well as clamped measurements. A fixture should establish a repeatable interface, not conceal an uncontrolled component by forcing every sample into a different shape. Record how contact surfaces will be cleaned and checked for wear.

Define acceptable evidence before comparing lasers

Decide how seam appearance, internal fusion, intrusion into the channel, dimensional movement and leak performance will be assessed. Select representative section locations, including starts, stops and corners where appropriate. Keep helium test conditions attached to the result rather than reporting only pass. A visually smooth bead is useful information, but it does not establish all functional requirements. The comparison becomes more useful when every candidate is judged against the same agreed inspection plan.

Send a revision-controlled review pack

Supply the drawing version, material and surface information, representative parts, expected product mix and the open design questions. Label intentionally difficult samples instead of mixing them into the trial unnoticed. Ask AOGEO to return a configuration proposal connected to those inputs: optics, motion, fixture approach and inspection interfaces. Record every authorized drawing change and the reason for it. The final review pack then becomes the starting point for process qualification rather than an isolated quotation attachment.

Frequently asked questions

Can the material name alone identify a suitable laser?

No. The actual joint, surface, fit-up, optical access and acceptance plan must be considered with the material grade.

Should a successful trial with uncoated copper approve a plated design?

Treat it as evidence for the tested condition. Compare the production plating condition explicitly before approving the changed interface.

Which drawing should accompany an RFQ?

Send the controlled production drawing and clearly identify optional changes. Keep trial sketches linked to their originating revision.
