Laser Cleaning and Weld Preparation for Liquid Cooling Components

AOGEO / Engineering decisions

A weld-preparation process should remove a defined surface condition while preserving the material and geometry needed for joining. Cold plates and manifolds may arrive with machining residues, handling contamination, oxides or coatings, but these conditions are not interchangeable. Laser cleaning is evaluated as a controlled local preparation task within the manufacturing route. It must be connected to inspection, extraction, handling and the subsequent weld, rather than judged only by the appearance of a bright surface.

Identify the removal task and the protected features

Document the substrate, material condition, coating sequence and suspected contaminant before selecting a cleaning recipe. Indicate the weld-preparation zone on the drawing and identify sealing faces, flow passages, threads and thin walls that require protection. A process intended to reduce an oxide layer is not automatically suitable for removing an organic film or a metallic coating. Define what may remain and what must not change, then choose verification methods that can distinguish removal from surface damage or redistribution of contamination.

Choose the position in the manufacturing route

Compare cleaning before assembly, local cleaning after positioning and any conventional preparation already required by the part. Consider whether the prepared surface can be touched by the fixture, exposed to packaging or contaminated while waiting for welding. A useful route includes the handling method and the permitted interval between preparation and joining. Local laser treatment before welding does not replace the final cleaning of an enclosed cooling circuit. Internal-channel cleanliness has its own access, flushing, residue and particle-control requirements after the component has been sealed.

Welding, whole-part leak testing and local leak location have different production tasks.

Evaluate a process window rather than a single attractive sample

Select trials that represent the range of incoming surface conditions, not only the easiest coupon. Record pulse and scanning settings, focal conditions, scan overlap, number of passes and processing direction as applicable to the selected equipment. Observe the transition between incomplete removal and unacceptable substrate alteration. Use surface inspection and the later welding result together: a visually uniform strip can still contain residues, while a change in surface color alone does not establish functional damage. Retain the uncleaned reference and unsuccessful trial conditions.

Control debris, plume and recontamination

Removing material from a surface creates a collection and containment task. Plan extraction close to the treatment zone and consider the direction in which particles or condensate could reach a channel, fixture or optical surface. Protective measures must remain compatible with the subsequent welding position and the cleaning recipe. Review access for filter service, collection of residues and inspection of shields. Evaluate the complete cell under representative production conditions because a process that appears clean on an isolated bench may redistribute contamination when enclosed or automated.

Verify the prepared surface using an agreed method

Select checks according to the removal objective: coverage and location, surface topography, residual contamination, coating retention or removal, and relevant dimensional change may require different methods. Document the inspection area and method instead of using a generic clean/not-clean label. Where cleanliness affects welding, correlate the surface assessment with representative weld trials and the resulting inspection evidence. Do not use a leak test alone to conclude that all surface or internal-cleanliness requirements have been met; leakage and contamination are different acceptance questions.

Integrate the station with fixtures and production records

The fixture should expose the intended area consistently and keep protected regions outside the validated treatment path. Define part orientation, recipe selection and response to an incorrect or unreadable part identity. The production record should connect the incoming lot and workpiece identity with the cleaning recipe, relevant checks and welding operation. If cleaning and marking share a station, confirm the order of operations and that marking does not affect the weld zone. Provide a controlled route for reprocessing and for parts whose incoming contamination falls outside the evaluated range.

Prepare a cleaning and welding validation package

For an AOGEO project discussion, provide drawings of the treatment area, material and coating information, representative incoming parts, known cleaning practices and the downstream welding requirements. Include the expected variation in surface condition and the methods currently used to inspect it. The proposed package should state the preparation objective, extraction concept, trial matrix, verification approach and equipment interface. Evaluate the cost and cycle contribution of the full preparation route, including handling, maintenance and residue management, rather than comparing laser processing time in isolation.

Frequently asked questions

Can local laser cleaning replace all washing of a cold plate?

No. Preparing accessible joining surfaces and cleaning a sealed internal flow circuit are different tasks. Specify the purpose and verification method for each operation.

Does a bright surface prove that preparation is complete?

No. Appearance is one observation. The agreed assessment may also need residue, topography, coating and protected-feature checks linked to representative welding results.

Should every coating be removed before welding?

The decision depends on the coating, joint and manufacturing sequence. Define the intended surface condition and validate the selected treatment rather than applying a universal removal rule.

What should be sent for a trial?

Send representative parts from the real incoming-condition range, material and coating details, a treatment-zone drawing and the welding and cleanliness acceptance requirements.
