Dual-IR Cold Plate Welding: Checking Starts, Stops and Corners
A closed cold plate seam includes more than steady straight travel. Starts, stops, corners and return-to-start regions can change the relationship between motion and energy delivery. For a dual-infrared arrangement, the relative beams or energy components must remain connected to those path features. A focused trial maps each transition and checks the finished seal instead of assuming that a successful straight coupon covers the whole component.

Create a transition map on the real seam
Mark the programmed start, stop, closure, corners and any deliberate interruptions on the controlled drawing. Identify where the path changes direction, the motion changes or the fixture support differs. Include ports and other geometry that affect access. Give these regions inspection identities so observations can be compared from sample to sample. The map makes the trial specific to the component and avoids choosing only a convenient straight section after the part has already been welded.
Connect motion with the actual energy arrangement
Record the permitted power and sequence controls and their relationship to programmed motion. With an offset arrangement, changing direction may change which contribution leads the joint; with an overlapping arrangement, the relevant question may concern power transition and exposure. Use the actual machine architecture to decide what is meaningful. Review command timing and available process records rather than assuming every programmed change occurs instantaneously at the workpiece. Preserve the tested optical configuration and recipe as one identifiable setup.

| Path feature | Question | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Start | How is the intended interaction established? | Setup record and location-specific inspection |
| Corner | What changes in motion or relative beam direction? | Actual path and corner results |
| Stop | How does energy delivery end? | Recorded sequence and end-region findings |
| Closure | How do the last and first regions meet? | Seal continuity and relevant internal checks |
Use deliberate trials rather than undocumented corrections
Select the transition most relevant to the observed problem and change a manageable set of inputs. Keep material, surface, fit-up and inspection conditions controlled. Repeat the selected condition and include the approved range of part variation before calling it a production solution. Record which transition settings are specific to this geometry and which remain common to the recipe. A correction at one location should be evaluated elsewhere on the seam so it does not solve an end defect while introducing a new issue at the corner.
Inspect transitions as part of the complete seal
Use agreed locations and methods to evaluate fusion, local geometry, internal discontinuities and penetration relative to protected channels. Relate the results to released dimensions and the defined leak test. Keep a surface photograph as supporting evidence, not the only acceptance result. Where closure regions overlap or interact, inspect the actual geometry produced rather than assuming the programmed path shows the final fusion boundary. Retain failed and marginal conditions with their position and recipe identity.
Define restart and production recovery separately
An interrupted partial seam is not equivalent to a new part. Establish the approved response to an interruption, including identity, inspection, authorization and whether continuation, rework or rejection is allowed. Do not make an automatic restart the default simply because the axes can return to a position. Demonstrate the selected handling logic during equipment acceptance. AOGEO can review the transition map and representative samples to connect the dual-IR setup, path programming, fixture and quality route within the actual production scope.

Does a good straight seam qualify a closed cold plate path?
It supports screening, but starts, stops, corners, closure and other relevant features need representative component evidence.
Is an offset beam arrangement independent of travel direction?
Do not assume that. Identify how the relative geometry changes through the actual path and validate the relevant transitions.
Can an interrupted weld always resume automatically?
Continuation needs an approved process and disposition rule. Machine position alone does not prove the partial joint remains qualified.
