Laser Cleaning vs Degreasing Before Cold Plate Welding: Choose by Contaminant
Laser cleaning and conventional degreasing are not interchangeable labels for a clean surface. They are process options that must be matched to the material, contaminant, joint region and downstream requirement. Some manufacturing routes may use both in sequence. This article explains how to select and verify weld preparation without assuming that an attractive surface appearance proves cleanliness or that a local laser operation replaces the final cleaning of a sealed cold plate.

Identify what must be removed and from where
Separate oil or handling residue, oxide, temporary protection and an intentional coating in the process description. Map the weld interface and the nearby functional surfaces rather than requesting general cleaning. Record how contamination is created and how its condition varies between incoming lots or storage periods. If the contaminant is uncertain, characterize it before selecting equipment. An operation optimized for one surface layer can leave another problem unresolved, or remove a layer that the product needs elsewhere.
Compare the complete preparation methods
For a degreasing route, define the cleaning agent or process, application, rinse where required, drying and control of residues. For a laser route, define the targeted area, material removal objective, extraction and checks for unwanted surface change. Neither method should be described as universally residue-free or harmless without verification. Include the necessary handling and environmental controls. The useful comparison concerns the surface delivered to the actual joining step, not just the visible action of a cleaning machine.

Consider combined and selective routes
A part may need broad removal of machining residue followed by selective preparation of a weld region, or another sequence supported by trials. Decide what each operation contributes and avoid making two processes redundantly perform an undefined task. Mask or protect areas that must retain a coating or finish. Check extraction and handling so removed material does not settle on a prepared region. For closed channels, plan internal cleaning separately from the accessible local treatment used before joining.
| Surface issue | Selection question | Verification focus |
|---|---|---|
| Oil or handling residue | What route removes it without harmful residue? | Defined cleanliness and drying condition |
| Oxide or local coating | Is selective removal required at the joint? | Removal extent and remaining substrate |
| Mixed contamination | Which preparation sequence addresses each layer? | Condition after every necessary stage |
| Prepared-part storage | How is recontamination prevented? | Handling, hold time and protection |
Verify removal and preserve the useful surface
Choose inspection methods appropriate to the contamination and product requirement. Visual appearance can support a check but should not be the only evidence where the risk requires more. Evaluate whether preparation changes roughness, geometry, coating boundaries or another functional condition. Use representative part surfaces rather than only flat demonstration coupons. Record the processing state and inspection result together so an acceptable surface can be reproduced. Avoid adopting a setting solely because it produces the brightest or most uniform-looking finish.
Control the time and handling before welding
Define how the prepared region is moved, stored and presented to the fixture. Consider gloves, trays, contact points and the maximum approved waiting condition. A validated preparation process can be undermined by later contamination or by a support contacting the joint surface. Include these steps in the trial rather than cleaning immediately before every laboratory weld while production parts wait elsewhere. Label any re-preparation rule and retain part identity if the preparation is repeated.
Approve preparation through its joining result
Compare prepared samples under controlled material, joint, fixture and welding conditions. Inspect the relevant seam and functional outcomes with the agreed quality plan, while retaining evidence for the surface itself. A good weld on one sample does not prove every incoming contamination state is covered. AOGEO can connect the selected preparation method to welding equipment and inspection interfaces. The approved output is a defined surface condition and process sequence, with limits and checks, not simply the purchase of a cleaning source.

Is laser cleaning only useful for oxide?
Its suitability depends on the actual layer, substrate and process. Identify the removal task and verify the result instead of choosing from a broad label.
Can laser cleaning replace internal-channel final washing?
Local accessible weld preparation and final internal cleanliness are different tasks. Establish a separate route for the finished channel where required.
Does a shiny surface prove it is ready to weld?
No. Use defined surface checks and controlled joining trials appropriate to the contamination and product risk.
